I’m Not Reviewing Onyx Storm
Hey. I realize that not everyone reads my Tumblr so I’m making this post to let everyone know that there will be no Onyx Storm review. I read the book (well, half of it), I absolutely hated it, and there’s not much I can say about it. It’s not even fun bad. It’s just bad. I would just be repeating myself if I reviewed this. I didn’t even get a bingo! What a giant waste of my time.
I was looking forward to Onyx Storm as there was a lot more I wanted to discuss about this series’ conception, but frankly… this shit sucks so hard. Onyx Storm is one of the most pointless books I’ve read in a while. It’s just 500 pages of filler with no direction, no stakes, no growth, no nothing.
Here’s my tumblr post about the book: https://www.tumblr.com/mayas-reviews/774407512498831360/onyx-storm-sucked-ass-im-not-going-to-write-a
I will not be reading the other two books in the Fourth Wing series and I will not be reading anymore of this romantasy crap. I didn’t give a damn about the genre until I read ACOMAF, to be honest. That book broke me and Onyx Storm has solidified my utter contempt for it. I will never enjoy this genre, not even ironically (not in its current state at least), as it’s not worth discussing. They’re all bad in the same ways. SJM’s crap, Powerless, From Blood and Ash, Lightlark, Fourth Wing, and many many more are just the same garbage over and over. I like reading bad books that are fascinating in their wrongness. That is what makes those books fun to write about in the first place. You can learn so much from tearing apart a work that gets everything wrong. But when a book is simply too boring to discuss, there’s no point. Everything I could say about Onyx Storm, I already said in my previous reviews on the series. I don’t want to repeat myself.
In general, I want to move away from reviewing popular books. I want to talk about shit no one cares about, the good and the bad, because it makes me happy. Shifting Roots, as disappointing as that book was, was fun to critique because it exposed me to bad writing I hadn’t seen in a published work before (blatant head-hopping, no establishment of setting or tone, the botched third person omni narration, etc.). I like discussing that kind of stuff. Plus I want to write more about the stuff I actually enjoy like Beastars, The Witchstone, Felidae, Wolf Quest 3, and hell, even Warrior Cats. I just want to have fun... that’s all.
So yeah, no more of this torture. I’m done.
